7 Ways to Keep Everybody Safe Around New Gym Gear

Whether it’s a home gym in the garage or a full facility, gear that’s set up wrong is gear that can hurt somebody. Here’s the checklist we run so your setup is safe from day one.

1. Have a plan

Before a single bolt goes in, know where each machine lives, how much clearance it needs, and how folks will move around it. Crowded gyms are how toes get crushed and cables get snagged.

2. Know the machine

Everybody who uses a piece of equipment should know how to run it safely — adjustments, safety stops, weight pins, the works. In a facility, that means real staff training, including first aid and CPR.

3. Keep up the maintenance

Give equipment a once-over before heavy use: check cables, bolts, welds, and pads. Anything cracked, frayed, or wobbly comes out of service until it’s fixed. A loose bolt today is a hospital trip tomorrow.

4. Put up signage

Simple signs on proper use and clear hazards do a lot of quiet work — and mark where the exits, extinguisher, and first-aid kit live.

5. Set the rules

Proper footwear, no horseplay, and no kids on the equipment without supervision. Boring rules prevent exciting injuries.

6. Keep it clean

Wipe-downs and sanitizer aren’t just for looks — shared equipment is a germ highway. Clean gear lasts longer, too.

7. Lock it down

In a facility, cameras and controlled access keep people and gear safe. At home, that just means keeping the little ones out when nobody’s spotting.
